| Kids - Welcome to National Engineers Week! Interested in changing the world? Write down your ideas and enter a new contest from the National Academy of Engineering that offers neat prizes, including cash. Entry deadlline is January 20, so start thinking! The big news is that now there is a new site designed just for you, especially if you're in grades 6-9. After you check out the information below, visit the new site at www.discoverengineering.org. For hundreds of years, engineers have been developing new technologies that revolutionize the way we work, play, learn, and communicate. At the IEEE Virtual Museum you can explore the history of these technologies, find out how they work, and learn about some of the people who invented them. Learn about engineering, earn national recognition, and win valuable prizes in a national computer-generated bridge-building contest! Anyone in Grades K-12 may compete. If you'd like to try your hand at engineering, you and an adult can try one of our hands-on activities, from building a mousetrap powered vehicle to sampling Slinky® science. You can discover engineering through reading. Check out our reading list and share it with your local librarian. If you want to tell us what books you like, you can receive a National Engineers Week button. While you're here, join in the adventures of Boing-Boing the Bionic Cat! Read our Re-engineered Fairy Tales written by students and real engineers. Check out the winning teams and models of the National Engineers Week Future City Competition. Maybe your school would like to participate. This site also has information about what engineers do and how to become an engineer. You can read about the real engineer featured in the recent hit movie October Sky. You can also meet an engineer, or discover how to Introduce a Girl to Engineering. Our News section contains feature articles on the engineering of products from microchips to potato chips. You can also contact other resources through our kids links and our sponsor links or learn about HP'S Telementor Program. And while you're at it, check out the workplace of the future. If you're still not convinced that engineering is a great career, visit our virtual exhibit, Breaking Through: The Creative Engineer and don't miss our Just for Fun section! |
